 Kathak is one of the oldest and most celebrated classical dance forms in India. The Kathakars or the storytellers were the artists who traveled from the Northern part of India.   3. Learn Kathak Hand Gestures: The beauty of kathak lies in facial expression and neat hand movements. The hand gestures are performed by either a single hand or both hands. Both have their significance in Kathak. Mudras performed by a single hand are named Asamyukta. While mudras performed with both hands are called Samyukta. The Pataka, the Mudraakhaym, the Mushti, the Kartari Mukha are some of the common mudras in Kathak. There are many more mudras apart from the mentioned ones in Kathak. One needs to have constant practice to have a good understanding of all the mudras. 
  4. Learn Kathak Footwork: Foot movements are the crux of this dance form. The footwork in Kathak is usually referred to as “Taatkar”. Initially, the teacher teaches the slow form known as “laya” which eventually increases as per the capacity and understanding of the student. Acing footwork is one of the most challenging parts of this dance form. However, with regular practice, and by actively attending Kathak dance classes, anyone can master these footsteps.
  5. Learn Kathak Expressions: The expressions expressed in Kathak are termed as“Mukhaj Abhniyaa”. Since Kathak is all about storytelling, right and sharp expressions can add a lot to the dance performance.  This dance form demands the depiction of a myriad of expressions like anger, sadness, happiness, excitement, and so on. Every dance form is incomplete without proper expressions. 
  6. Learn To Combine All Elements: Kathak has a variety of hand moves, footwork, and facial expressions in it. All the steps, body movements, and expressions aligned with the music and “taals” in a proper way will make a person excel in this dance form. Learning these elements in complete detail will require a good amount of time and hard work. Hence, the learner of this dance form is advised to have patience.
